Southampton FC Under-23s lost out 2-1 to Nottingham Forest in their Friday night Premier League Cup fixture.

Two goals from Forest courtesy of Virgil Gomes and Zac Clough either side of the break ultimately were enough for the hosts, despite a late Kornelius Hansen strike.

Forest had the game’s first real chance after just seven minutes; Liam Sole hitting an effort from range which Jack Bycroft did well to hang onto.

Saints responded a minute later, Will Ferry laying a ball into the path of Dan N’Lundulu on the edge of the box whose eventual shot was well blocked.

But it was the hosts who got the evening’s opener after 16 minutes; Brennan Johnson playing a low ball across the face of goal towards Gomis who hit his effort home.

Saints looked to bounce back following the early set-back, N’Lundulu and Ferry involved again down the right wing with Forest holding strong.

The goal followed a fast start for Forest to the second 45, with Bycroft being called into a vital one-on-one save shortly after the restart.

With the game shaping up to be a tight affair Saints were offered a lifeline with just under 20 minutes to go.

After great work from Ferry on the right wing he found substitute Hansen in the middle, whose first effort was well blocked.

His second effort made no mistake, firing into the top corner on the 71st minute and giving Dave Horseman’s side hope.

Saints continued to press during the closing stages, captain Aaron O’Driscoll making several vital challenges to stop Forest counters and move the visitors forward.

Nathan Tella made his return to action after ten months out and looked a real danger to the Forest defence during his spell on the pitch.

But ultimately Forest claimed all three points in the Premier League Cup, leaving Saints with just their rearranged trip to Stoke in the competition.

Their game comes in Premier League 2, with a visit to Blackburn Rovers on 14th February.
